HUNGER

So today I came across and purchased the first issue of HUNGER magazine, RANKIN's new project! I actually picked up and purchased the magazine without even turning a page of the inside and didn't actually see that the editor-in-chief was RANKIN before sitting down in front of my computer just now and opening the first pages. Within an instant of looking at the magazine rack in WHSmith I knew what I would be going home with. Initially, I had gone in there looking for V magazine as nowhere in little tiny Epsom seems to have it...and neither did WHSmith, but from my loss, I gained this new and exciting delight. With a catchphrase of 'FOR THE CULTURALLY AND VISUALLY HUNGRY' it seems that this Launch Issue is the first of many more to come.

Test Shoot 2.

Here are some of the images from our 2nd test shoot. In this test shoot most of the styling has been incorporated and where you see a nude bra, it will actually be topless. Backgrounds have also been experimented with in some of the images but because of the lack of pairs of hands, we struggled to have backdrops in all of them. BUT...I do love how the black backdrop makes it look like it isn't underwater so therefore the ripples make the images very surreal. Enjoy...

Adam James Workshop.

The Adam James workshop was such a fun day. As a group we had to create characters using various clothing and accessories that we had brought to the workshop. I'm not sure that it helped us towards our group project but definitely taught us how just through the use of clothing we can change our persona and character. Check out our amusing images below...

Lecture from Rui Faria, Editor of Volt Magazine

I found this man so genuine and inspiring, I would now love to work for Volt magazine!
Rui's first life ambition was like most men, he wanted to be a rockstar...so when that failed Rui became a photographer and after a chat in a bar with a close friend, within 7 months Volt magazine was born! The first issue of Volt magazine was only sold in 2 stores in the U.K. and now, after 4 years and on it's 10th issue, Volt magazine is sold in 32 coutries worldwide, I'd say that is pretty good going. Each magazine is hand folded as it is too big for any machine to fold, that is 78,000 sheets to fold and can take up to a whole week! Check out the Volt Cafe website for great fashion films and stories www.voltcafe.com. The aesthetic of the magazine is 'Visually intoxicating'! And just look at the stunning cover of the current issue 10...

Additional lecture notes for setting up a magazine:
  • Market research
  • Long term plan
  • 3 - 4 years to break even
  • Realistic budget
  • Make a dummy mag - don't print thousands - give to distributor
  • Find good printer
  • Realistic cover price

Lecture from Michael Baker from BLOW PR

With Michael Baker being an ex-student, he really understands how difficult it is to be a student and work in the industry so offers a lot of experience within BLOW PR. He himself worked for the company whilst being at university and therefore walked straight into a job after graduation. BLOW is a PR company specifically for young, new designers and has been running for 10 years! Michael is the showroom manager where he is in charge of the running of the office and works at front of house for Fashion Week. Michael gave so much great advice in his lecture, not just about working in the industry but also advice towards our degree as well.

Notes from lecture:
  • SWOT analysis - concentrate on your STRENGTHS
  • Work on things that inspire & interest you!
  • Look at current affairs...media, film, TV, books.
  • Make sure dissertation is highly interesting, inspiring and can gain LOTS OF RESEARCH
  • Showroom Manager - Make sure the whole office runs smoothly and front of house for LFW
  • Blow has been running for 10 years - for new brands and young designers
  • Blow Presents...concentrates on the new designers from high street to couture.
  • LOOK UP - William Wilde (Latex Fashion Designer)
  • Know EVERYTHING for interviews!

My CV

Here is a copy of my CV before it has been shown to the tutors. I am thinking of possibly having a play around with the logo as it isn't very relevant to what I do. I also think this logo is a little girly. Because of the skinny layout I haven't been able to fit my education on so that may come up as an issue...I may have to resolve this one.

Photography Workshop in Studio

Here are some notes I made from the studio photography workshop with Eloise Calandre.

Light Meter:
  • For medium tone
  • Sync lead goes in main light
  • Make sure white ball is covered over to the left
  • Incident reading is reading light going TO the skin.
  • Reading light from camera is reflective reading for if you are photographing lights
  • Set mode (Z -shaped arrow and small c icon) for studio with flash & sync lead.
  • Match iso, aperture & shutter speed to camera (100 iso for studio)
  • Higher iso is for less light unless you want a grainy image.
  • Set iso & shutter speed on light meter.
  • Don't use really fast shutter speed or really slow (use 1/60 or 1/125)
  • For more or less light - turn light up or down, not shutter speed
Flash heads:
  • Flash light for brighter, quick & fast light to replicate daylight
  • Modelling light - not bright light, just to see what you're doing
Dials:
  • Power - flash output
  • Lamp - Modelling light (Alter both power and lamp together)
  • For stop & tenths just worry about stops.
  • Infared controls other lights (cell button)
  • Beauty dish - wider light and good for shadows
  • When creating shadows, make sure light reading is in correct areas (the area closest to the light source)
  • Camera can only see 3 stops difference to stop set on camera.
Eliminating shadows:
  • Light both back drop and model separately
  • Light model with brighter light (over expose but not too much - 1-1.5 stops brighter)
  • Hard light - Not much gradation
  • Soft light - more flattering (diffuse light or wider light)
Snoot: Cone shaped light fixture for a spotlight

Honeycombe fixture: cuts light up for a softer light.

Lecture from Jade Stavri - Fashion Editor of DISORDER magazine

Another inspirational lecture from an ex-UCA student, who didn't actually do that well in her degree coming out with just under a third, Jade Stavri is now the fashion editor of DISORDER magazine at just 25 years old! Jade has lived and breathed the fashion industry to get where she is today and did not let any friends or boyfriends get in her way! Whilst at university she worked looooads of interships, from what she was saying, there wasn't a moment where she wasn't trying to get some experience in one way or another and just look at how well all that experience has turned out...despite her low grade degree!

Entanglement: The Ambivalence of Identity

At Rivington Place in East London I went to the Entanglement: The Ambivalence of Identity exhibition which showcased work from artists such as, Simon Fujiwara, Anthony Key, Dave Lewis, Nina Mangalanayagam & Navin Rawanchaikul. The artists explore the complexities of living with more than one culture, looking at their own identities and past debates, bringing them into the context of todays globalised society. It is explored through seriousness but also humour as well. It is definitely an exhibition that needs time spent on looking and reading...a very interesting afternoon was spent in Rivington Place and I came out feeling very informed.

Anthony Key - 'Book of Numbers'

Nina Mangalanayagam - From the 'Homeland' series

Nina Mangalanayagam - Also from the 'Homeland' series
