Photography Workshop in Studio

Here are some notes I made from the studio photography workshop with Eloise Calandre.

Light Meter:
  • For medium tone
  • Sync lead goes in main light
  • Make sure white ball is covered over to the left
  • Incident reading is reading light going TO the skin.
  • Reading light from camera is reflective reading for if you are photographing lights
  • Set mode (Z -shaped arrow and small c icon) for studio with flash & sync lead.
  • Match iso, aperture & shutter speed to camera (100 iso for studio)
  • Higher iso is for less light unless you want a grainy image.
  • Set iso & shutter speed on light meter.
  • Don't use really fast shutter speed or really slow (use 1/60 or 1/125)
  • For more or less light - turn light up or down, not shutter speed
Flash heads:
  • Flash light for brighter, quick & fast light to replicate daylight
  • Modelling light - not bright light, just to see what you're doing
Dials:
  • Power - flash output
  • Lamp - Modelling light (Alter both power and lamp together)
  • For stop & tenths just worry about stops.
  • Infared controls other lights (cell button)
  • Beauty dish - wider light and good for shadows
  • When creating shadows, make sure light reading is in correct areas (the area closest to the light source)
  • Camera can only see 3 stops difference to stop set on camera.
Eliminating shadows:
  • Light both back drop and model separately
  • Light model with brighter light (over expose but not too much - 1-1.5 stops brighter)
  • Hard light - Not much gradation
  • Soft light - more flattering (diffuse light or wider light)
Snoot: Cone shaped light fixture for a spotlight

Honeycombe fixture: cuts light up for a softer light.
